David MacKenzie

Career / Academic – Class of 1979

David MacKenzie’s educational roots stretch back to Grand Haven High School and clearly primed him for business growth.

MacKenzie is the founder of Hortech, one of the country’s largest and most progressive wholesale ground cover nurseries. He also formed LiveRoof Global, LLC (a subsidiary to Hortech), the leading horticultural science company in the green roof industry; and LiveWall, LLC, a successful sister company that offers full vertical gardens that can be shipped anywhere in the world from headquarters on M-104 between Spring Lake and Nunica.

After graduating from GHHS in 1979, MacKenzie attended Hope College and earned a biology degree. The knowledge served him well.

The Nunica resident is recognized nationally as an expert in his field. His experience with plants and horticulture helped him to significantly improve green roofs as a key component in responsible green building design.

MacKenzie has authored four books on ground covers and has published several articles for the commercial horticulture industry and is an active photographer and lecturer. He has earned recognition as a voter favorite in Art Prize, an international art competition, and his installations have earned top 25 and top 20 finishes in two Art Prize events.

He serves on the Meijer Gardens Horticultural Committee and board of directors for the Chamber of Commerce, Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg.
